Wind River has announced a new commercial Linux offering designed specifically for cloud-to-edge deployments.
The offering, eLxr Pro, is based on the eLxr open source project, which consists of Debian packages that have been optimized for performance, security, and size required to run edge workloads.
According to Wind River, the project came at a time when CIOs were beginning to reevaluate Linux vendors because of supplier disruptions like CentOS reaching end-of-life back in June. The company believes that the existing alternatives were either too limiting or too complex, while eLxr sits somewhere in the middle and enables users to reuse core operating system components, code bases, and frameworks so that they can more efficiently run complex workloads.
“There is an industry need for a true open source offering not controlled by a corporate entity, but with the option for a highly scaled, reputable business to support the distribution. eLxr Pro offers the industry a robust and differentiated option, backed by an industry-leading open source solutions provider,” said Avijit Sinha, president of Wind River.
Wind River’s eLxr Pro offering provides security updates and technical assistance, including long-term support, professional services, and maintenance beyond what the open-source community can provide.
It also offers different service-level agreement (SLA) options to assist companies in resolving security issues.
